For an upcoming trip out to Los Angeles to visit my girlfriend, I plan on renting a car during the weekend for some fun driving around. The only things I really care about is that the car is fun and that it doesnt cost too much (looking to spend under $300 total for 3 days). Manual is highly preferred but not absolutely required, lots of power would probably help me forget. Here is the list I have come up with so far:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m an Engineer so I love seemingly pointless lists like this haha. Note that the price listed there doesnt include the fees so its like $50 to $70 higher or so for the total.

My tops right now:

If it were a manual I would have chosen this one. I dont like NC Miatas but I am willing to give it a chance

automatic but I figured more power should be better than an NC Miata

Kinja'd!!!

automatic, but 400 hp would help me forget

A lot of the others are further down the priority list due to low mileage restriction (100 miles a day is a stretch but maybe doable) or they are just expensive. My overall favorite is the M235 since its a manual but its just too pricey and my girlfriend kinda wants a convertible. It is SoCal so it makes sense!

And the last one, an S2k. I really want to choose that one since then I get a manual and its cheap. But the biggest concern is the reviews talk about exhaust leaks and poor maintenance, as recent as December. Plus its only 100 miles a day. But I could swing it if I wasnt worried the car would fall apart.

I really wish it didnt look so stupid with the top up haha. I plan on driving top down anyways but it just seems like such an anti-Miata. Maybe that is a good thing, do something different than I am used to.

If it was me I’d do the Miata or s2000. The driving I’ve done in LA was pretty mellow and an open top is nice, as long as you have valet in a good hotel.

Do the s2000.

Its a Honda, solidly built and reliable.

I daily drive a convertible in NJ so doing so in LA is a cake walk lol. My girlfriend has a spot in her garage at night which works out nicely. I am leaning towards the S2k but I want to try and contact the guy to find out if the problems reported were repaired. I’ve always wanted to try an s2k.

This is true. Assuming its not a dumpster fire of deferred maintenance, it would definitely be the most fun. And I wouldnt feel bad beating the piss out of it considering its not a garage queen.

Yup! I’ve always wanted to give an s2000 a go. Only reason I have a Miata is because I couldn’t find a nice 2k locally. Also the labrea tar pits blew me away... It looked like Starfleet academy and the museum was one of the best I’ve been to.

what do you think the s2000 was built for?

To be babied? NO!, it was made to be absolutely trashed going all the way to 9000 rpm!

Funny how I have never been to the Tar Pits and I have been there every couple months for the last 2 years. I guess I just tend to avoid downtown and spend most of my time in the mountains or the valley. For the s2k I am curious how the no power below 6k rpms will feel but I am sure the 9k shifts will be fun though.

Forget linear power, I just want that stratospheric redline! I kinda wish it were an AP1 though. But I am sure it would be fun either way.

I did straight tourist stuff when I’ve been there - and it was good. I’m not usually into it. Have fun!

8200 rpm is still insane! Also the ap2 has 2 cup holders!

Not 1, but 2!

Also a lot more stability.

I vote against the E-Class. Unless you really need the space, it really isn’t anything special to drive or look at. The S2000 and Miata are far more fun convertibles.

It’s not a Miata but it’s no slouch I promise!
